1st church-based Child Survival Program in Mindanao launches
The Matina Baptist Church and the Davao City Four Square Gospel Church were chosen by the Compassion International to implement the Child Survival Program (CSP) for the neediest mothers and young children of the impoverished families under the care of the Tomas Claudio Health Center and those in Purok Lanzona and Seaside II of Brgy. Matina Aplaya.
The activities are focused on the pregnant mothers, children in their womb and those new born until they reach the age of three years. The goal of the CSP is to ensure the quality of life of the mothers and children through their holistic development which is comprised of the following aspects of their lives namely: Physical/Health, Psycho-social/Emotional, Cognitive or intellectual and more importantly is the spiritual aspect.
This program is being implemented with Technical and Funding Assistance from the Compassion International. The CSP center at the Matina Baptist Church serves as a Health and Nutrition Post (HNP) in strong partnersgip with the Brokenshire College and the Davao City Health Office and its health service centers in the barangays of Matina Crossing and Matina Aplaya.
It is envisioned that with the development of the mothers, they will be equipped to provide services in their homes and as caregivers in the Health and Nutrition Post.
The approach being used is spelled out with the GOBI-FFF which means Growth Monitoring, Oral Rehydration Breastfeeding, Immunization, Family Planning, Feeding/Food Preparation and Female Functional Literacy.
Beyond the CSP, when the child will reach the age of three years, he or she will be qualified to enter the Child Development Sponsorship Program (CDSP). The children will continue to undergo holistic developmental activities until they graduate from the program upon reaching the age of 21 years.
